Bush backs gay marriage ban

President Bush’s announcement that he will support a Constitutional amendment outlawing same-sex marriages in the US is sending shockwaves across the libertarian part of the blogosphere. Andrew Sullivan, who has been finding more and more fault with Bush in recent months, has taken the gloves off. Instapundit says simply, “I think it’s probably a bad thing for all concerned.”

It’s hard to imagine this proposal will get enough support to be added to the Constitution– fortunately the Founding Fathers made it extremely difficult to amend. But I suppose Bush felt the pressure from his supporters on the traditionalist/religious right, and figures that his supporters on the libertarian right have no choice but to express their unhappiness and vote for him anyway.
