The transformation of Derek Black

You may recall a Harry’s Place post of several years ago about how Ann Atwater, a black civil rights activist in North Carolina, helped transform C.P. Ellis, a Ku Klux Klan leader in the state, from a racist to a believer “that whites, especially the poor, stood to gain from the civil rights movement more than under segregation.”

As I wrote:

I remain in awe of Ann Atwater… How many of us would have whatever rare quality it took to reach out, as she did, to someone representing such a hateful movement?

Now The Washington Post has a long piece, worth your time to read, about Derek Black, the son of the founder of the neo-Nazi Stormfront website and a former rising star in the white nationalist movement.

Black began to question, and ultimately abandoned, his racist and antisemitic beliefs when an Orthodox Jewish student at his college invited him to Shabbat dinners.
