Does it help your electoral chances to have people laugh at your ads on blogs?

It’s a huge question and I’m not sure we can do it justice here, but I wanted to ask. If you’re from Alabama does it help your electoral chances to have people laugh at your election ads on their blogs after they explode virally?

The question is being asked about four candidates who ran in last week’s primary elections in Alabama (full results for all primaries on Al.com ) as their election videos continue to do the rounds.

We’re rank amateurs in the UK compared to the States when it comes to this stuff. If you’ve not seen the ads they are truly a thing of wonder. Forget David Cameron looking like a slick PR man who can’t resist another puff of foundation for that airbushed look. I’m pretty sure that kind of behaviour will not get you endorsed in Alabama (these guys have guns and they are not afraid to wave them around in their TV ads).

Starting with the ad being dubbed “Most American Thing Ever” and starring Dale Peterson. This should be studied. Most importantly for its use of a horse, a rifle, fast talking and western music.

Dale Peterson – ran in the Republican primary for Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries.

Top line: He’s a farmer, business man, cop and former US marine. It is set to music from the ‘Big Country’ (or similar); plus some stuff about thugs and criminals — but still getting in a mention of social media and Facebook. Awesome. All this for third place seems harsh. Then again…

Tim James a real estate developer ran in the Republican Gubernatorial Primary – joint second place with state Republican Robert Bentley.

Bottom line: driver’s licences are in 12 languages (this is wrong) if you want to live in Alabama learn English. Stirring music.

Judge Roy Moore – ran in the Republican Gubernatorial Primary

This one is an attack ad on Republican rival Bradley Byrne that accuses him (a turn coat Southern Democrat, no less) of the low down dirty crime of supporting evolution! Byrne denies it. And won.

Byrne says: “As a Christian and as a public servant, I have never wavered in my belief that this world and everything in it is a masterpiece created by the hands of God. As a member of the Alabama Board of Education, the record clearly shows that I fought to ensure the teaching of creationism in our school textbooks. Those who attack me have distorted, twisted and misrepresented my comments and are spewing utter lies to the people of this state.”

Les Phillip ran in Republican primary for 5th Congressional District

Bottom line: He’s black, he’s not a racist and lefty radical Obama is destroying America. He’s going to stop him.

Phillip came last. What we can learn from his ad is chiefly not even a picture of an aircraft carrier can guarantee your election in Alabama.
