Will Chavez help?

There’s something rather sadly naive about this plea from three leftwing Iranian groups for Hugo Chavez to use his close relations with President Amhadinejad and his “undoubted persuasion skills” to convince the government of Iran to free imprisoned student and women’s-rights activists, trade unionists and journalists.

But hey– surprise me, Hugo. I’ll give you full credit.

I’m reminded of the pathetic hope of Yoshie Furuhashi (now blogging at Lenin’s Tomb on such topics as the revolutionary Marxist character of Shi’ism) that Fidel Castro would persuade Ahmadinejad to see the error of his Holocaust-denying ways.
