In 1956 Democrat Adlai Stevenson– who lost to Dwight D. Eisenhower in the 1952 Presidential election and went on to lose to Eisenhower again that year– said:
Trust the people, trust their good sense, their decency, their faith. Trust them with the facts; trust them with the great decisions; and fix as our guiding star the passion to create a society in which no American is held down by his race or color, by worldly condition or social status from earning that which his character earns him as an American citizen, as a human being as a child of God.
Reading some of the comments by self-described leftists after last week’s election, I wonder how many of them would be willing to fully endorse Stevenson’s words. And if leftists are in fact unwilling to trust the people, are they entitled to call themselves leftists?
