What’s in a name?

As I’ve mentioned before, I think race is becoming less and less of an issue in American life. The trend is very gradual and uneven, but it’s happening.

Nevertheless I got a reminder from Sunday’s Washington Post of how far we have to go in some areas– especially employment. Based on a test in Chicago and Boston, job applications with typically “white” names were 50 percent more likely to result in callbacks than similar applications with typically African-American names.

So why do conservatives– in the blogosphere and elsewhere– seem to think the only racial bias worth talking about these days is the much less frequent (but odious) discrimination against whites?
