Fascinating republished piece in the Guardian today on an incident at the 1948 Olympics when the U.S. team were accused of ‘disrespecting’ King George VI by refusing to dip their flag.
Aside from the issue of whether people ‘dissed’ in 1948 Britain, it is interesting to note the (then Manchester) Guardian going out of its way to present the American context and perspective and then reach the final conclusion:
“Any notion that it was part of a sinister plot to to emphasise the dominance of capitalist America over Britain may be left to the Moscow radio”.
One wonders how the Guardian would cover a similar incident today?
