Just spoke to a friend who was on the Iranian solidarity demonstration in Rome, organised by the left newspaper Il Riformista.
Around 2-3,000 people were present at Campo de’ Fiori, with a good turn out of Iranian exiles as well as representatives of diverse range of Italian political organisations, including the Friends of Israel and peace activists.
Although the event was organised by the left, there were speakers from the governing conservative coalition on the platform. As news came through of some of the events on the streets of Tehran there were chants of ‘Liberta! Liberta!’
One Iranian speaker asked why it had taken 24 years for people to show an interest in democracy for Iran.
If I can get hold of any photos I’ll post them here.
