Happy Easter from the National Secular Society

I’m sure readers will welcome this bold move from the NSS.

You can read all about it here …

Their last sentence was doubtless prompted by the latest wave of halal hysteria.  Sainsbury’s tweeted (in error) that all its Easter Eggs were halal certified.   This prompted squeals of anguish on social media, boosted by a further alleged concern – that Sainsbury’s wasn’t using the word ‘Easter’ on its eggs.

Although this too didn’t seem to be true (certainly the word was all over the website) a quick google of ‘1970s easter eggs’ offers a reminder that the word ‘Easter’ has long been omitted from (most) packaging.

But that didn’t stop the outrage.

Most Easter eggs of course contain only halal ingredients (though it would be a bit odd to have them officially certified) and, judging from Twitter responses, quite a few Muslims enjoy them.
