To the relief (I imagine) of Republicans who care about their party remaining relevant to more than just an angry fringe, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann of Minnesota has announced that she won’t run for reelection in 2014.
As much as anything, I think this has to do with her very narrow reelection last year (following her unsuccessful bid for the GOP presidential nomination), and the real prospect of defeat in the coming election.
Well, too bad. We won’t have Bachmann to kick around anymore. It’s probably a sign of her political flameout that I haven’t bothered to do it much lately.
Maybe the best way to remember Bachmann is her astonishing record of falsehood. On this I’m actually willing to give her the benefit of the doubt: She doesn’t simply make stuff up. Rather, she repeats anything she hears or reads that sounds right to her, without engaging in the wimpy liberal practice of fact-checking.
