It will come as no surprise to most readers that I was not a fan of George W. Bush’s presidency (search the archives if you don’t believe me), and I was very happy to see him replaced by Barack Obama.
But I think it says something good about the United States– and something you can’t say about a lot of other countries– that Obama and all the living former presidents joined Bush for the dedication of his presidential library in Dallas.
Obama delivered a gracious tribute to his predecessor, and I was pleased to hear him single out what could be Bush’s most important legacy— his program to help AIDS victims in Africa, which may have saved millions of lives.
Of course some of Obama’s rightwing opponents complained about him mentioning that Bush as president had supported an immigration reform plan similar to the one Obama is now trying to get through Congress.
