By popular request – a short post on the EU. Although UKIP has other issues on its agenda apart from Europe, its decision (£) to field candidates in every constituency seems calculated to encourage the Government to listen more to its Eurosceptic wing, perhaps commit to a referendum (a position which Labour has flirted with). Recently the Obama administration has expressed anxiety about a UK exit because it might diminish the standing of a key US ally. Germany’s finance minister has also raised concerns:
“I would wish for more British involvement in Europe, not less,” he said in an interview with German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung.
“We want to keep Britain in the EU and not push it out.”
However, Mr Schäuble cautioned that any attempt to “blackmail” Germany with threats of an exit would not be tolerated.
“Our British friends are not dangerous, but a referendum would create uncertainty,” he added.
Are such remarks a drawback for UKIP – or an early Christmas present?
