Threats force atheists to remove their posters

This is the image which caused so much outrage in North Carolina that the posters had to be removed.

Although American Atheists were prepared to ignore any hostile response, Adams Outdoors Advertising felt they could not continue to display the posters after their staff were targeted with threats and hate speech.

Here’s one email the atheists received (expletives edited):

“I hope your children are raped by a herd of goddamn N$%#ERS and then their throats are slit and they die a slow painful death. Now that would be fun to watch. I hope it happens to all of you atheist parents.

Annette Knief of American Atheists responded to the threats:

“We are saddened that by choosing to express our rights as atheists through questioning the religious beliefs of the men who want to be our president that our fellow citizens have responded with vitriol, threats, and hate speech against our staff, volunteers, and Adams Outdoor Advertising.”

To me, the posters seem unnecessarily aggressive.  But, like Knieff, I think people should be able to question religious beliefs without being threatened.
