There was a heartening interview (from 26:35) on the BBC World Service this afternoon, about the UN tribunal inquiring into the death of Hariri and others. The daughter of an apolitical academic who was one of the victims supported the inquiry, whereas the son of a senior military figure who was also assassinated was against it.
His reasoning was that as an engineer, he knew that the mobile phone and other electronic communications evidence had been controlled and manipulated by Jews and Israeli people.
The Prof’s daughter responded impatiently: Look, Israel will be there forever and we will have to fight it forever, put this aside. Israel is our enemy: this is a fact and we don’t have to say it all the time. We will fight it till death. But maybe Israel will be much more harmed if we created a strong Lebanon with justice and equality. We don’t have to prove anything by referring to it all the time. We need to move on and create a democratic society. Israel’s only raison d’etre is to wage war, so maybe peace is what scares them.
Son of a General disagreed. If this corrupted evidence is used to blame Hizbollah for the assassinations, it will cause war between Sunni and Shia and this would play right into Israel’s hands.
What is heartening about all this? Oh, the good news that they recognise that Israel will be there forever.
