The Party for Socialism and Liberation is a Marxist party based in the United States. They declare that they are “fighting for socialism,” that “Socialism is the only answer” and that they are carrying out the “most important and most necessary of all tasks — building a new revolutionary workers party in the heart of world imperialism.” Last weekend they held a National Conference on Socialism in Los Angeles where party supporters wished to “Stand Up and Fight Back.” Below is an audio recording from the conference of a speech by Ben Becker, the editor of the party’s newspaper, Liberation, and a conference participant:
Becker called for a head-cracking revolution:
I think that, you know that, we also want to talk about, we want to raise people’s consciousness, we also want to fight people, right. So I think it is like both things, you know, like, you know, we want to, we want to fight people who are, who have signed up on the other sides of the barricades and are fighting us. We have to fight them, right. We are a militant organisation… The labour movement has its old saying… ‘if you cannot open their minds, open their heads.’ Now, I don’t know if we want to take it quite that far in all the issues, but I think that we have to be fighters… I’m serious, I’m sorry: if we are not fighters we are not going to recruit the people most affected by this injustice, because they are the ones that want to fight.
Many Marxists are very keen on advocating violence. According to Stéphane Courtois, a figure approaching 100,000,000 were killed by Communists in the last century. One wonders how many more they would kill if they were given a chance.
