Obama’s Uncle and the Liberation of Auschwitz

As the Washington Post says this latest gaffe by Barack Obama about Auschwitz may become the stuff of legend.

People have been trying to label Obama as a serial exaggerator like Al Gore (inventor of all things TM), but now he has gifted the Republicans one for free as he spoke movingly about how his uncle was one of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps.

“And the story in my family is that when he came home, he just went into the attic, and he didn’t leave the house for six months. Alright? Now, obviously something had affected him deeply, but at the time, there just weren’t the kinds of facilities to help somebody work through that kind of pain.”

As has been pointed out it was Soviet troops who liberated Auschwitz while Americans liberated Buchenwald. He should have claimed that his uncle liberated Bergen-Belsen. That camp was liberated by British troops, but at least being airbrushed by Hollywood from Second World War history is something we’re used.

The Obama campaign has responded by saying that the mistake was not as bad as it might seem as his uncle was there at the liberation of Buchenwald. Obama is just confused.
