Last year I posted about Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury, a Bangladeshi journalist arrested in November 2003 on his way to attend a writers’ symposium in Israel and charged with espionage and sedition. He was freed on bail last year, but still faces the death penalty.
Now comes the news that Choudhury was attacked by about 30 men at the offices of his newspaper, “Blitz”, on October 5.
His attackers are thought to have included leading members of the ruling Bangladesh National Party (BNP). Chaudhury was reportedly badly beaten in the attack, and around 400,000 Taka (approx. US$4,000) and several cell phones were taken from the “Blitz” office.
