Former MP Matthew Banks challenged for antisemitism

It’s being reported that Matthew Banks (a former Conservative MP (Southport 1992-97) who later joined the Lib Dems) has now been suspended from the Lib Dems following his bizarre and offensive comments on Twitter.

Here’s the tweet which kicked things off:

And then things swiftly deteriorated.

The first response to Cazique of Poyais is just extraordinary, even leaving aside the fact that I’m not sure Banks had any reason to assume s/he was Jewish. In his next response, to Matthew Severn, he asserts that only non-Jews are capable of making any valid criticism of his remarks.  Similarly, his comment to Daniel Finkelstein suggests that any repercussions he may face are a function of Jewish (and implicitly illegitimate) influence.
