There’s plenty to talk about here. We’ve already discussed the proposal that the under 25s should be denied housing benefit. Two apparently unrelated suggestions are perhaps linked. In this Telegraph report, news about clamping down on the rights of new mothers is preceded by a description of Osborne’s most novel proposal, the suggestion that workers should give up their employment rights in return for tax free equity.
Employees will receive between £2,000 and £50,000 in return for giving up their rights to bring a claim for unfair dismissal, redundancy, and the right to request flexible working and time off for training.
I assume it’s women who are currently most likely to request flexible working – and pregnancy/maternity issues would seem to be a key factor in cases of unfair dismissal. Well – they will be once you’ve waived your rights.
