Non-profit community ownership with a human face

Hull’s Drive-In here in Lexington, Virginia, is the first and (so far) only non-profit, community-owned drive-in movie theater in the United States. (To keep from aggravating certain people, I’ll avoid the dreaded “s” word.)

I went there last week with my nephew, my niece and her boyfriend to see “Brave,” and the place was packed with ordinary families in cars, pickup trucks and SUVs. If you want to associate non-profit community ownership with snobbish elites, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Part of a small counter-trend against the hypercapitalist zeitgeist? Who knows? But we enjoyed it.
