Brig-Gen Manaf Tlass has defected. Although, barring suggestions of Alawite links via his paternal grandmother, he is Sunni, he previously had been close to the Assad family; and, disallowing suspicions of whether his father and former close ally of Hafez Assad has defected or merely is seeking ‘medical assistance’ in France, this is the highest ranking defection of the current uprising.
