In the Year of Jubilee is a little known, but interesting, novel by George Gissing, set at the time of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. One might not be surprised to learn that people toiling to ensure that those celebrations went smoothly had to spend a cold and wet night under London Bridge, were denied access to toilets and were paid peanuts. But it’s a bit shocking to learn that this how a group of 21st century job seekers were treated over the weekend.
