The conservative American columnist George Will has written a genuinely moving and life-affirming piece about his 40-year-old son with Down Syndrome.
But unfortunately– Will being Will– he wrote that “Jon was born eight months before Roe v. Wade inaugurated this era of the casual destruction of pre-born babies.”
Does he really believe that for the vast majority of women who decide to have abortions, there is anything “casual” about it?
Further, it would have been useful if Will had dealt with the economics of raising and caring for a child with Down Syndrome. He might then have had to acknowledge that one reason for Jon’s success is the relative affluence of his father– and that many other parents have to depend on an increasingly fraying public sector for the care and education of their Down Syndrome children.
