According to people who have been in Syria, pictures of President Bashar al-Assad and his late father Hafez are ubiquitous. If the objective is to create a sense of reverence and/or intimidation, it doesn’t seem to be working so well in the southern city of Daraa– where, according to the latest reports, security forces killed six people after storming a mosque that has been a center of anti-government resistance in recent days.
