“A Matter of Principle”

Harry’s Place readers will be interested to know that a collection of essays entitled A Matter of Principle: Humanitarian Arguments for War in Iraq has recently been published. Edited by Thomas Cushman, professor of Sociology at Wellesley and editor of The Journal of Human Rights, the book includes chapters by Christopher Hitchens, Norman Geras, Johann Hari, Paul Berman, Ann Clwyd and Jose Ramos-Horta, among others.

Cushman writes in his introduction:

In being critical of the Bush administration’s handling of the war, on the one hand, and the arguments of those who were against the war, on the other, the essays in this volume constitute what might be called a third view. The basic elements of this perspective are a strong liberal commitment to human rights, solidarity with the oppressed, and a firm stand against fascism, totalitarianism and tyranny.
