It’s shaping up to be an important and positive day in the Northern Ireland peace process with Stormont elections set for November 26th.
Blair is on his way to Belfast and there is lots of talk of a ‘historic’ statement from the IRA this afternoon.
As always the best blog source for Northern Ireland issues is the very balanced and informed Slugger O’Toole.
Update: Sadly not as positive as most were hoping for. David Trimble has put the process ‘on hold’ despite the IRA’s latest and largest decommissioning of weapons.
It looked as though everything was coming from a script earlier today. Did the IRA bottle out of an agreed ‘historic statement’ (Sky News was hinting they might declare ‘the war is over’) or has Trimble backed away from his committment?
