It’s a sign of how far the Republican party’s center of gravity has shifted to the Right in recent years that the liberal Think Progress website can make a convincing case that a candidate with Margaret Thatcher’s beliefs would have a slim chance of getting anywhere in today’s GOP.
If Margaret Thatcher– rather than Al Gore– had been the public face of the campaign to publicize the dangers of man-made global warming, and to call for action against it, I think the doubters, scoffers and obstructionists would be a lot more marginal than they are now.
Update: It has been pointed out in the comments that Thatcher, a scientist, later reversed her views on global warming– although she was quite eloquent in making the original case (was she really so bamboozled?). Other scientists have made the opposite journey.
Update: MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell makes a similar point: “Barack Obama is not half the socialist Margaret Thatcher was.”
