This is how insane “progressive politics” has become.
There is an organisastion which calls itself “Women Against Rape“. It is a prominent organisation which has played a major role in the reform of rape law in the United Kingdom. This is how it describes itself on its website:
This is the joint website of Women Against Rape and Black Women’s Rape Action Project. Both organisations are based on self-help and provide support, legal information and advocacy. We campaign for justice and protection for all women and girls, including asylum seekers, who have suffered sexual, domestic and/or racist violence.
WAR was founded in 1976. It has won changes in the law, such as making rape in marriage a crime, set legal precedents and achieved compensation for many women. BWRAP was founded in 1991. It focuses on getting justice for women of colour, bringing out the particular discrimination they face. It has prevented the deportation of many rape survivors. Both organisations are multiracial.
And this is what it has to say, in The Guardian, in opposition to the extradition of Julian Assange to face questioning, arrest and charge for the serious sexual assault which he is alleged to have committed in Sweden:
It seems even clearer now, that the allegations against him are a smokescreen behind which a number of governments are trying to clamp down on WikiLeaks for having audaciously revealed to the public their secret planning of wars and occupations with their attendant rape, murder and destruction.
…
But does anyone really believe that extraditing Julian Assange will strengthen women against rape? And do those supporting his extradition to Sweden care if he is then extradited to the US and tortured for telling the public what we need to know about those who govern us?
I would say I was astounded. But I’m not.
This is another illustration of the shabby state of the so-called “progressive Left”. No principles at all. Ridden with conspiracism. Utterly callous.
What a shambles.
UPDATE
Here is one of the authors, Lisa Longstaff, defending Assange (and Galloway) on Sky TV (at 3 minutes in):
“Julian Assange is not the man to make an example of”
She claims that rapists aren’t generally pursued by the law. This is a lie.
Oh, and here’s Dan Hodges.
FINAL UPDATE
I had completely forgotten – these are the Kings Cross Womens’ Centre crew – Lesbians Due Wages and all that. They’ve always been very very very silly.
