How to commemorate the great Egyptian revolt

This is a cross-post by Shiraz Maher from Standpoint Magazine

What has transpired in Egypt is truly historic. After covering events there for this magazine and spending long periods of time with protesters in Tahrir Square I’m disappointed to have missed their celebrations this evening. I’ve been speaking by phone to some of the people I met while out there and they tell me a massive party is underway.

I think we should commemorate events by creating a new political party to celebrate the heroic achievements of the men and women of Tahrir Square.

I propose we call it, “The Party of Tahrir” which in Arabic would be…er, actually, maybe not!

The joke only works if you know my past (and a tiny bit of Arabic). If not, google it.

For now, salute the Egyptian youth and share their joy!

Goodnight!
