In yesterday’s introductory message, I mentioned my belief that a strong and democratic labor movement can help make the world a better place for many more people than it is now. How many people who cheered the anti-union policies of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan (and now Bush the Younger) acknowledge that it was a labor union– Solidarnosc– led by a young electrician named Lech Walesa which knocked over the first domino in the collapse of the Soviet empire?
Here’s another example of union strength— on a smaller scale, of course, but certainly important for hundreds of thousands of janitors and their families.
