The US Senate has finally turned its attention from such trivial matters as health, education, immigration and Iraq to the most important issue facing our nation today: the raging, uncontrolled epidemic of flag-burning.
Washington Post columnist Dana Millbank writes:
The Citizens Flag Alliance, a group pushing for the Senate this week to pass a flag-burning amendment to the Constitution, just reported an alarming, 33 percent increase in the number of flag-desecration incidents this year.
The number has increased to four, from three.
Update: The Senate fell one vote short of the two-thirds needed to send the anti-flag-burning amendment to the states for ratification, but not before sponsor Orrin Hatch, Republican of Utah, said it was indeed the most important issue the Senate could be dealing with.
