If asked to choose between never being able to (re)read any of those ‘difficult books’ (see previous post) and never being able to watch the second series of Game of Thrones – I wouldn’t have to think long and hard over my answer.
Game of Thrones is based on the fantasy novels of George R. R. Martin. It’s set in a (broadly) Medieval world in which rival clans from the seven Kingdoms of Westeros are fighting for the ‘Iron Throne’. Its combination of strong (and comparatively subtly developed) characters and tense family and political dynamics make for compelling viewing. There’s plenty of action (of various kinds).
There are some interesting concepts too – the seasons of Westeros operate quite differently from those of Earth as extended periods of ‘summer’ and ‘winter’ alternate unpredictably. And there has recently been a period of religious transition in which the old gods have been replaced by new ones.
I’d be interested to learn if Game of Thrones has as much of an HP fan base as Blake’s 7. Try to avoid spoilers – and, whether or not you are yet a convert to GoT, why not take this quiz to identify which character you most resemble.
