Putting democracy first

Some facts worth noting in the midst of the current Ukranian crisis.

The Washington Post reported:

Ukraine has sided with the United States in sending troops to Iraq; at the same time, U.S. officials have criticized the government of President Leonid Kuchma, saying it uses strong-arm tactics against opponents.

And as The Post pointed out in an editorial, the government-backed candidate for President, Viktor Yanukovych, made a “cynical offer to extend the deployment of Ukrainian troops in Iraq,” which the US essentially rejected by challenging his supposed election victory.

I’m not suggesting that the Bush administration’s motives in this case are purely altruistic; but wouldn’t a Chomsky or a Pilger expect the US to put the interests of its fragile coalition in Iraq ahead of the interests of democracy in Ukraine? How would cynical “anti-imperialists” fit the American response into their worldview?
