The only surprise for me about the re-election of Corbyn, bearing in mind all we’ve heard about entryism, is that a little over 38% of Labour Party members didn’t vote for him.
Now we’ll see a series of serving Members of Parliament swearing fealty to Jeremy Corbyn. Seeing as how 172 of them tried to push him out to see them now say such nonsense as “we need to unite behind the leader” is rather sickening but this was precisely what Chuka Umunna was saying on the BBC in the wake of the result.
After any particularly hard fought leadership battle the talk was always about unity but this is out of place now. Leadership elections rarely bring a party in a direction so out of step with the electorate they are ostensibly attempting to win over. There could be no better metaphor for the confusion reigning in the Parliamentary Labour Party than Owen “negotiate with ISIS” Smith. Aware that Corbyn is the wrong choice but unsure how to convince his own party’s base of that fact. Instead of coming out against Corbyn he painted himself as a sort of Corbyn lite,
At this point diving back in and working for the success of a Labour Party that doesn’t represent their own views on governing the country would be an exercise in duplicity. Corbyn is the very antithesis of what so many of them stand for, it’s why so many of them tried to push him out and yet here they are at the ultimate test, where their words about love for the party are on the cusp of being exposed as nonsense. It was their principles which led to the coup, will their principles be strong enough for them to make the necessary choice to quit as MPs?
Imagine if the PLP really did unite behind Corbyn and were successful in getting Corbyn’s Labour elected, it wouldn’t be the Labour Party that was in charge but a bunch of “nationalise it” hard left socialists who would anoint their messiah as the grand high “how very dare you question me” inquisitor of the British Isles.
To remain as an MP in Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party is to betray the very principles they tend to say brought them into the party in the first place. Time to admit the truth, the entryists won, leave them the rotting carcass of what was once the Labour Party.
Jewish Labour Councillor Claire Jeffrey @MrsCJeffrey has resigned from the party following today's leadership result.
