Unsurprisingly Hillary Clinton has chosen Senator Tim Kaine from here in Virginia to be her running mate against Donald Trump and Indiana Governor Mike Pence.
She apparently decided she could go with a fairly safe and uncontroversial choice. Some on the left of the Democratic party consider him excessively moderate. Hillary is likely to carry Virginia anyway, but this makes it somewhat more likely.
I would have preferred Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, but Kaine is a good guy. There are unlikely to be uncomfortable scenes of Kaine grimacing and shaking his head as Clinton goes off the rails.
He is the son of a welder. He was a Catholic missionary in Honduras (he speaks fluent Spanish), mayor of Richmond and governor of Virginia.
Here he is, while governor, playing harmonica and singing in Appalachian southwest Virginia with a band performing the gospel song “Will the Circle be Unbroken?”
Update: Hillary Clinton was no fool when it came to choosing a running mate. Watch Tim Kaine’s first speech as candidate for vice president. Quite a contrast with Trump and Pence.
