For all the lies and distortions in Donald Trump’s acceptance speech Thursday night, this one phrase ought to send chills through every American– left, right or center– with a belief in constitutional democracy and the rule of law.
Trump went on to say that Bernie Sanders’s supporters will join “our movement.” Sorry, Donald. Maybe a handful will, but the overwhelming majority won’t go anywhere near your campaign.
And Bernie himself is having none of it.
Trump: “I alone can fix this.”
Is this guy running for president or dictator? #RNCwithBernie— Bernie Sanders (@BernieSanders) July 22, 2016
Trump: “I alone can fix this.” Maybe he doesn’t understand that a president has to work with Congress. #RNCwithBernie

Looks like Ted Cruz was right about one thing. Trump does not understand what the Constitution is about. #RNCwithBernie

Yes, that’s why– given the awful choice of a Trump presidency or a Cruz presidency– I would choose the latter. Cruz at least has a grasp of constitutional principles.
Update: A message from the Russian chess champion and anti-Putin dissident Garry Kasparov.
I’ve heard this sort of speech a lot in the last 15 years and trust me, it doesn’t sound any better in Russian.
