A planned aid convoy to assist those in the refugee camps in Calais has been stopped at Dover due to security fears. Many, with reason, are opposed to the dehumanising way in which refugees and migrants have been represented, and concerned about the conditions in Calais and elsewhere. The murder of Jo Cox prompted, rightly or wrongly, further discussion about the problematic way in which this issue has been represented in elements of the media and in political campaigns. But if we are to talk of the ‘mood music’ which enables violence then the chanting of the convoy protestors surely also has to be condemned.
