Iranian and Israeli athletes bond at Special Olympics

If being mentally challenged means that you are capable of befriending people whom you’re supposed to hate, then there are a lot worse things than being mentally challenged.

In previous sporting events, Iranian athletes have been ordered to withdraw from competition if their opponent was meant to be an Israeli. But at the Special Olympics [in Los Angeles] something, well, special, is happening.

(Hat tip: David Tick and Tori Egherman. Tori writes: “Let’s hope the Iranian team does not face any repercussions when they return. If they don’t that will signal a change in the way their athletes get to perform in international competitions.”)

Readers will know that I’m not an apologist for the Israeli government, but it’s safe to say there will be no repercussions on the Israeli side.
