Iran

Khamenei still pissed off at 2009 “seditionists”

Remember back in 2009, when millions of Iranians took to the streets to protest a rigged presidential election and demand genuine democracy– until their uprising was brutally crushed by the ruling regime?

One popular chant of the demonstrators– rejecting the regime’s emphasis on support for Israel’s enemies Hamas and Hezbollah– was “Not Gaza, not Lebanon, I’ll sacrifice my life for Iran.”

It seems the Supreme Leader hasn’t forgotten.

According to Khamenei.ir, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addressed a group of over a thousand university students [Wednesday] and said, “The seditionists (Green Movement) with their slogan of ‘Neither Gaza nor Lebanon (only Iran),’ wanted to portray Iran as something else (to the world). But the Iranian people didn’t allow this to happen, and once again on Quds Day this Friday, we will prove as always, who is the oppressed and who the ruthless oppressor is.”

Well, it’s good to know that it got under his skin.

EA Worldview notes:

Despite proclaiming victory over the rallies five years ago, the regime continues to hold hundreds of political prisoners, including the 2009 Presidential candidates Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi and Mousavi’s wife, activist and academic Zahra Rahnavard.
