1. His criticisms of “unfettered capitalism” and “idolatry of money” in a recent document had Rush Limbaugh sputtering about “pure Marxisim.”
(In fact, other recent popes– most notably John Paul II— have said many of the same things about capitalism while advocating social democratic economic policies. The difference seems to be that Francis is putting more emphasis on social and economic justice while failing to sufficiently appease conservatives with admonitions on such matters as abortion and homosexuality.)
2. He reportedly has ventured out at night in ordinary priest’s clothing to meet Rome’s poor and homeless.
3. He once worked as a nightclub bouncer in Buenos Aires.
(Apparently he got fired for letting in “poorly-dressed losers” and lepers.)
