Assange seeks Ecuadorian asylum

Rather than face the brutal hell that is the Swedish justice system, WikiLeaks honcho Jullian Assange is at the embassy of Ecuador in London seeking political asylum.

Which raises the question: why not the embassy of Belarus? Did he burn his bridges by appearing at the premiere of the critical film about Lukashenko?

Ecuador is part of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA) bloc of “leftist” Latin American nations founded by Hugo Chavez. Among its other activities, ALBA sent a delegation (including an Ecuadorian official) on a solidarity visit last October to President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.

Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa has engaged in a Chavez-like effort to silence critical independent media.

Update: So I guess the supporters who put up bail for Assange– presumably on his promise not to flee– are out a big chunk of change.
