I’m reading Nick Cohen’s You Can’t Read This Book at the moment – and very good it is too. But I wasn’t sure about this:
The best thought has moved beyond religion. It is for this reason that religion, which once inspired man’s most sublime creations, can no longer produce art, literature or philosophy of any worth; why is it impossible to imagine a new religious high culture.
Although I’m an atheist, I reacted rather negatively to that point. I suppose this is because so much of my favourite art, literature and music was inspired by religion. A bit serious for ‘Dress Down Friday’ perhaps – but I wondered what other readers’ thoughts were.
