Tomorrow evening, the newly founded LSE SU Liberal Society will be holding its first official event. The event, open to the public, will feature Nick Cohen, co-author of the Euston manifesto and a journalist for the Observer speaking ‘in conversation with’ Daniel Johnson, the editor of Standpoint and a past journalist for the Times and the Telegraph.
They will be speaking before the society on the topics of free speech and censorship. These topics are especially pertinent for two reasons. First, Mr. Cohen has just published a book titled You Can’t Read This Book on this very subject. Second, this past academic term at the LSE discussions about the validity of free speech have been raised countless times on campus. The Liberal Society is therefore proud to host these two journalists to promote the importance of free speech.
We were founded with the intent to promulgate small-l liberalism, which encompasses a broad range of values including freedom of speech, equality of opportunity, gender equality, and LGBT rights. We hope to create a new attitude and a much-needed space for open-minded discussion for students across the political spectrum.
