Stateside,  Vote 2012

Bye, Dennis

While Mitt Romney was scoring a narrow and unimpressive victory in the Ohio primary over Rick Santorum in his near-death march to the Republican presidential nomination, Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Cleveland was losing in a Democratic primary to Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur. (The two were competing for the same seat due to redistricting.)

The New Republic offers some reasons to not feel very sad, most notably this:

Kucinich raised the ire of Republicans, Democrats, and anyone who opposes brutal dictators when he flew to Syria last summer to meet with Bashar al-Assad. Syria’s state media duly quoted Kucinich saying “President al-Assad is highly loved and appreciated by the Syrians.” The Congressman later said this was a “mistranslation”, though he hasn’t yet thought it necessary to apologize for supporting Bashar’s regime.
