Negative campaign ad watch: the sushi wars

Aficionados of negative campaign ads may recall this classic of the genre from 2004, produced by the rightwing Club for Growth, when it seemed former Vermont governor Howard Dean might be the Democratic nominee for President.

Note that among the epithets flung at Dean’s “freak show” was “sushi-eating.” (For a rough UK equivalent, see “bruschetta-munching.”)

Now, almost eight years later, the worm has turned. A Democratic group has produced an ad attacking Republican Congressman Sean Duffy of Wisconsin, noting that he has said his favorite meal is steak and sushi.

What gives this ad more bite is that Duffy has said he struggles to get by on his $174,000-a-year Congressional salary, while his wife has sushi flown in fresh to their home in Wisconsin at Christmas.
