During last week’s debate among the Republican candidates for president, one of the biggest cheers from the party faithful in the audience came when NBC’s Brian Williams mentioned that the State of Texas under Gov. Rick Perry had executed 234 death-row inmates, “more than any other governor in modern times.”
At Monday night’s debate, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer asked Ron Paul if someone without health insurance should be allowed to die for lack of treatment. Note the shouts of approval from some in the audience.
Surely in whatever corner of hell he occupies, Jose Millan Astray— one of Francos’s generals during the Spanish civil war of the 1930s– must be smiling.
Astray is associated with the chilling Fascist slogan from the war: “¡Viva la muerte!” (Long live death!)
