As Syrian government forces proceed with their bloody assault on the rebellious northwest town of Jisr al-Shughour– apparently trying to set a brutal example that will cow the regime’s opponents throughout the country– another army officer has announced his defection. He appealed to the armed forces to protect the people and not the Assad gang.
