Kate Allen, Director, Amnesty International UK

“Outside the Law: Stories from Guantánamo” is a documentary film, directed by Polly Nash and Andy Worthington, telling the story of Guantánamo and the shocking truth behind this notorious prison. The film is based around interviews with former prisoners (Moazzam Begg and, in his first major interview, Omar Deghayes, who was released in December 2007), lawyers for the prisoners and investigative journalist and author Andy Worthington.

The local Amnesty branch is very excited:

Jonathan Ure, Coordinator of Amnesty International Leicester said “Andy Worthington is standing up and making a bold statement of truth, exercising his right as a journalist to investigate the actions of the state and using his freedom of speech to draw attention to the some of the hypocrisies that are perpetrated by the West’s so-called “war on terror”, a war that has eroded the very principles that we are supposed to be fighting to defend.”

If you’d like to find out more about human rights issues come along this Thursday to meet Andy Worthington and members of Amnesty International who will be happy to answer your questions.

The film screening marks the celebration of Amnesty International’s 50th Birthday and is the first of a number of events to mark the occasion including Summer Sundae, Amnes-TEA PARTY for Riverside Festival 4th June, Gay Pride and much more. If you’d like to find out more about Amnesty International’s work or get involved in local campaigning activities please feel free to get in touch with the group
