Nick Clegg has been telling the party faithful that the Liberal Democrats “we will not lose our soul” while in coalition with the Conservatives. Clearly, u-turns on tuition fees and the destruction of the NHS are not issues for soul searching, but rather ones the party must simly “toughen up” over.
The Lib Dems will surely need to toughen up if the humiliating sixth place result in the Barnsley Central by-election is repeated. Something one protester pointed out on his placard: “Go back to your constituencies and prepare for oblivion.”
All this has left some inside and outside the Lib Dem conference wondering who their leader has become in partnership with Cameron. Helpfully Greg Stekelman (@themanwhofell) has shed some light on that.
