FDA proposes new cigarette warnings

The US Food and Drug Administration is proposing some new and quite graphic required warning labels for cigarette cartons. They will be hard to ignore.

The agency is seeking public comment through January 9, 2011, and plans to issue final regulations requiring these color graphics by June 22, 2011.

It reminded me of this Mad magazine parody ad from the 1960s (based on the cowboy-themed “Marlboro Country” ads) which probably did as much as anything to keep me from taking up smoking. However my mother’s life was probably cut short by cigarettes, so I find it hard to object to these proposed warning labels.
